Job Description

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced IT Infrastructure leader who combines deep hands-on technical expertise with strong people leadership to take ownership of a large, complex and business-critical technology environment.

As Platform Technical Lead – IT Infrastructure, you will play a key role in shaping, leading and continuously improving Viva Energy Group’s server, hosting and infrastructure platforms across our Energy, Commercial and Retail businesses.

This is not a purely strategic or people-management position. We are looking for a leader who has built their career in infrastructure engineering, understands the technology at a deep level, and can confidently provide technical direction while leading and developing a team of experienced engineers.

Reporting to the Head of IT Infrastructure, you will lead a team of 10+ Technical Engineers and work closely with architects, application teams, developers, security specialists, technology partners and business stakeholders.

This role offers the opportunity to influence technology across a significant enterprise environment, including:

Approximately 1,250 sites across Energy, Commercial and Retail
Around 800 applications
5 datacentres across Melbourne, Geelong and Adelaide
Approximately 120 Azure and AWS landing zones
Around 2,800 physical and virtual servers across remote sites and datacentres
Approximately 6,500 endpoint devices
Around 15,000 employee identities across Active Directory and Microsoft Entra ID

Responsibilities & Requirements

Technical Leadership & Infrastructure Design: Lead the design of secure, scalable, resilient and high-performing infrastructure solutions across datacentres, remote sites, edge environments and Azure/AWS cloud platforms.
Server & Hosting Platforms: Provide technical leadership across Windows and Linux operating systems, VMware virtualisation, enterprise compute, storage and hosting technologies.
Implementation & Deployment: Lead infrastructure implementations, upgrades and deployments, including configuration, troubleshooting, testing and proof-of-concept environments.
Operations & Reliability: Oversee the availability, reliability and performance of infrastructure supporting a large-scale, 24/7 operating environment.
Team Leadership: Lead, mentor and develop a team of 10+ Technical Engineers, providing technical direction while fostering collaboration, accountability and continuous improvement.
Automation & Optimisation: Identify opportunities to automate repeatable activities, improve operational efficiency, optimise costs and simplify the infrastructure environment.
Security & Compliance: Ensure infrastructure platforms meet security, patching, vulnerability remediation, compliance and governance requirements.
Incident Management: Provide senior technical leadership during complex infrastructure incidents and Level 3 escalations, including root cause analysis and corrective actions.
Technology Strategy: Contribute to Viva Energy Group’s infrastructure roadmap across server and hosting, datacentres, edge compute, cloud, automated deployment, resilience, scalability and cost optimisation.
Risk & Resilience: Identify and mitigate infrastructure risks and contribute to disaster recovery and business continuity planning.
Vendor & Stakeholder Management: Build strong relationships with technology vendors, service providers, architects, application teams, security specialists and business stakeholders
Continuous Improvement: Stay abreast of emerging technologies and identify opportunities to modernise and continuously improve Viva Energy Group’s infrastructure environment

Qualifications

15+ years' experience in IT Infrastructure, supported by a strong hands-on technical background.
5+ years' experience as a Platform Lead, Infrastructure Lead, Infrastructure Manager or similar leadership role within a large enterprise environment.
Significant experience managing complex server and hosting environments, datacentres and multi-site infrastructure.
Extensive expertise across Windows and/or Linux systems administration and engineering.
Strong experience with VMware virtualisation technologies.
Experience with enterprise compute and storage technologies, including platforms such as Dell, Lenovo, Cisco, Dell EMC and NetApp.
Strong knowledge of Active Directory, Group Policy and Microsoft Entra ID.
Experience across Azure and/or AWS cloud infrastructure.
Demonstrated capability in architecting, designing, building and operating both on-premises and cloud-based enterprise infrastructure.
Experience across server, storage and networking administration, configuration management, monitoring and alerting, backup and recovery, and patching.
Experience with Azure Virtual Desktop and remote desktop technologies.
Knowledge of Infrastructure as Code (IaC), automation and containerisation technologies.
PowerShell and SQL scripting experience.
Familiarity with DevOps methodologies and CI/CD technologies.
Strong understanding of networking concepts, infrastructure security protocols and security best practices.
Experience managing complex infrastructure incidents and providing Level 3 technical support and escalation.
Demonstrated experience leading and mentoring technical engineers and managing blended teams of employees, contractors and technology partners.
Strong problem-solving and analytical capability with the ability to navigate complex technical challenges.
Excellent stakeholder management, communication and influencing skills.
Experience contributing to technology roadmaps, budgets, infrastructure projects and continuous improvement initiatives.
A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a related discipline will be highly regarded.
