Senior Software Engineer
Marigold Group · Australia
The Company
Marigold is a fast-growing marketing technology company helping growing businesses build stronger customer relationships through its three core platforms: Emma, Campaign Monitor, and Vuture. We deliver powerful tools for email, SMS, and marketing automation that elevate engagement and drive real results. Marigold is headquartered in Nashville, Tennessee with offices in Sydney and London.
The Role
We're looking for a highly experienced Senior Software Engineer to join our dynamic, fully remote team. You'll work alongside people who genuinely know their craft, in a flexible environment built around real work-life balance: no burnout culture, no pretending "flexible" means "always on." This role blends technically challenging work with the room to influence how we build and shape engineering practices.
What You'll Do
- Develop, Own & Maintain: Build and own robust software solutions using strong Object-Oriented Programming principles, applying sound judgment about when to trust, verify, or override AI-assisted output as part of your daily workflow.
- Architect & Modernise: Contribute to technical direction, facilitate architectural conversations and coach teammates through complexity. Design scalable systems and modernise legacy ones with an eye for maintainability and thoughtful abstraction, including spotting where AI-assisted automation (code review, triage, docs, skill-building) can responsibly cut manual toil.
- Operate & Evolve: Own and evolve the messaging/event infrastructure that underpins our downstream systems, using Kafka and other message bus tools to keep it reliable and scalable.
- Cloud Infrastructure: Collaborate on AWS services including Fargate, Bedrock, EC2, ECS, SNS/SQS, RDS, Elasticsearch and more.
- DevOps Excellence: Work with containerization (Docker, Kubernetes), infrastructure as code (Terraform) and deployment automation.
- Database Management: Apply SQL and NoSQL expertise to support scalable data solutions.
- On-Call Support: Lead and participate in rotational on-call duties, driving reliability improvements and proactive monitoring.
- Collaboration & Document: Work across disciplines to shape roadmap, improve developer experience and drive learning through code reviews, while championing documentation and design records that stand the test of time. Partner with our internal tooling teams, surfacing real-world feedback that shapes how AI-driven orchestration, review, and triage tools evolve across engineering.
- Mentor & Motivate: Support other engineers through mentoring and example, building a collaborative, inquisitive team culture.
About You
- Mindset: Team-first, inquisitive problem-solver with real passion for continuous learning, comfortable pairing your own judgment with AI-assisted tooling rather than treating either as a replacement for the other.
- Work Style: Thrives independently and collaboratively in a remote setting.
- Communication: Skilled at turning complex ideas into actionable strategy, in writing and in conversation.
- Team Enablement: A natural mentor who brings others along, not just someone who "helps when asked."
Ideal Qualifications
- Experience: 9+ years in software development with proven OOP commercial expertise with Java and at least another language (C# preferred), experience with Kafka (other message bus systems considered too) and microservices.
- Technical Skills: Deep acumen in system design, scalable architecture, cloud technologies (AWS preferred) and modern software practices. Strong background in infra, DevOps and tools like Docker, Terraform, Kubernetes.
- Database Knowledge: Comfortable across both SQL and NoSQL systems.
- AI-Augmented Engineering: Real, daily experience with AI coding/review assistants, and a track record of critically evaluating their output rather than accepting it blindly.
Missing a few skills? That's fine. We value curiosity, growth and the drive to contribute.
Your Growth & Development Journey
- Skill Advancement: Work with cutting-edge technologies while deepening your expertise across our modern stack.
- Knowledge Sharing: Regular sessions where the team trades insights, best practices and emerging tech.
- Showcase Opportunities: Present your projects and innovations to leadership and cross-functional teams.
- Mentorship Culture: Lead by example for the wider engineering team, while sharpening your own craft alongside staff-level peers and leadership.
Why You'll Love It Here
- Ultimate Flexibility: Unlimited time off, flexible hours, fully remote work and your birthday off.
- Parental Leave: Generous parental leave for both parents.
- Home Office: Setup allowance for new starters.
- Genuine Connections: Optional fortnightly team gatherings at WeWork offices (lunch on us), culture clubs, an annual DevCamp to meet the wider team in person, Change Days and Innovation Sprints.
- Professional Growth: Work at scale with cutting-edge technologies, keep learning, and see a real path forward.
- Support & Benefits: Employee Assistance Program, wellbeing app, flu vaccinations, salary continuance and life insurance.
- Work-Life Harmony: A culture that respects your time and your life outside work.
