Job Description

The Digital Communications Technology Specialist is a hands-on technical role responsible for building and executing enterprise email communications, maintaining and enhancing SharePoint-based intranet experiences, and developing digital workplace solutions using Microsoft 365 technologies. The ideal candidate combines strong HTML email production skills with SharePoint expertise and an understanding of enterprise digital communications.

The specialist is responsible for creating and managing content across the company intranet, utilizing platforms such as ServiceNow and SharePoint. In addition, the role includes designing, building, and executing email communications through a third-party platform, ensuring accuracy, usability, and alignment with established standards.

Working in partnership with stakeholders across the organization, the Digital Communications Specialist gathers requirements, recommends appropriate communication approaches, and helps implement solutions that address business objectives. The role contributes to defining specifications and supports the delivery of digital communication initiatives from concept through execution.

As a member of the Corporate Communications team, this position provides guidance on the effective use of Microsoft 365 tools and digital communication platforms. The specialist applies best practices and established guidelines to ensure communications are aligned with corporate strategy, governance, and user experience principles.

This role actively leverages advanced digital tools, including generative AI technologies such as ChatGPT, as a core part of the content development and communications process. The specialist is expected to use AI to enhance content quality, accelerate production, personalize messaging, and drive continuous improvement in communication effectiveness. This includes applying sound judgment to ensure outputs are accurate, compliant, and aligned with corporate standards, as well as identifying new opportunities to integrate AI-driven solutions into digital communications workflows.

Key duties and responsibilities:  

Digital Communications Specialist will:

• Understand and optimize the integration and user experience between SharePoint and ServiceNow within the digital workplace.

• Develop, design, and execute communications through a third-party email platform, ensuring high-quality, accessible, and engaging outputs.  

• Support graphic development for email and web content, ensuring visual consistency and alignment with brand standards. 

• Design and implement digital solutions utilizing Microsoft 365 tools, including SharePoint Online, Viva Engage (Yammer), Power Automate (Flow), PowerApps, Forms, and video.

• Translate business communication strategies and requirements into effective digital solutions, including detailed designs and implementation plans.

• Actively engage with stakeholders to understand business challenges, identify opportunities, and recommend value-added improvements to communication approaches.

• Provide informed recommendations on appropriate technologies and platforms to meet project and communication needs.

• Contribute as an active member of project teams, supporting initiatives from concept through execution and delivery. 

• Ensure all work aligns with enterprise strategy, governance, and communication standards. 

• Facilitate hand-offs and knowledge transfer to IT or other teams for requests outside of scope, ensuring continuity and clarity. 

• Maintain current knowledge of evolving technologies, industry trends, and best practices in digital communications. 

• Serve as a subject matter expert and contribute to knowledge sharing across the team and organization. 

• Leverage generative AI tools, including ChatGPT, as a core component of the communications workflow to enhance content creation, streamline processes, improve personalization, and increase overall effectiveness.  

• Apply critical thinking and governance when using AI-generated content to ensure accuracy, compliance, and alignment with corporate standards, while identifying opportunities to expand AI-driven capabilities within digital communications. 

iConnect (Thermo Fisher’s intranet) and Microsoft 365:

• Drive adoption of iConnect and Microsoft 365 tools through training, enablement, and the development of effective business solutions. 

• Support the development and execution of strategy for Thermo Fisher’s intranet and digital workplace. 

• Build and maintain strong partnerships with functional teams, business groups, and leadership to enhance the employee experience, driving efficiency, effectiveness, and alignment. 

• Create a seamless and integrated experience across collaboration platforms, including SharePoint, ServiceNow, and Microsoft Teams.

Skillsets:

• Strong project management skills, with the ability to independently manage multiple projects simultaneously across the full project lifecycle. 

• Working knowledge of graphic design principles, with the ability to create and edit visual assets to defined specifications. 

• Experience interacting with and influencing colleagues at all levels of the organization. 

• Strong understanding of digital communication platforms and tools used to support business initiatives and employee communications.  

• Ability to translate technical concepts into clear, accessible language for broad internal audiences. 

• Demonstrated ability to think strategically while executing tactically and delivering high-quality results. 

• Comfortable working in environments characterized by change, complexity, and ambiguity. 

• Ability to simplify complex challenges and recommend practical, effective solutions.

• Proficiency in using generative AI tools, including ChatGPT, to support content creation, improve efficiency, strengthen message quality, and enhance digital communication workflows.

• Working knowledge of HTML coding for email development, with the ability to build, edit, and troubleshoot email templates to support effective digital communications.

Minimum requirements & qualifications: 

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Business Administration, Communications, or a related field; or equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience. 

• 3+ years of experience working with intranet and collaboration platforms. 

• 3+ years of experience supporting or delivering enterprise-scale digital or communication solutions. 

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to craft clear, engaging content for diverse audiences. 

• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to translate business needs into practical, effective solutions. 

• Advanced knowledge of Microsoft 365 and collaboration tools, with demonstrated expertise in SharePoint and the Power Platform. 

• Working knowledge of HTML, with the ability to build, edit, and troubleshoot email templates and ensure compatibility across email clients. 

• Experience leveraging generative AI tools, such as ChatGPT, to enhance content creation, improve efficiency, and support digital communication strategies. 

• Ability to apply critical thinking and governance when using AI-generated content to ensure accuracy, compliance, and alignment with organizational standards.
