Design Technologist
Hi Marley · Boston · $82,600–$129,800 (stated in the posting)
Insurance plays an important role in people’s lives, providing protection and peace of mind through life’s adventures and unexpected turns. In the moments that matter, people want to know their insurer is there for them. At Hi Marley, we help insurers deliver on that promise through communication that brings greater clarity and connection to the policyholder experience.
As we continue to grow, we’re looking for a Design Technologist to help shape the platform experiences that power Hi Marley. You’ll work with two teams, Network and Core Services, whose work sits underneath every Hi Marley product: how carriers connect with their partners and vendors, and how they set up, manage, and monitor the platform itself.
This role is for a designer first. You bring strong interaction and visual design skills, an interest in complex configuration and data-heavy interfaces, and curiosity about how things are built. Over time, we want this role to grow into front-end work, so if you already write some code or are eager to learn, we’d love to hear from you.
You won’t be shipping production front-end code. Instead, you’ll bring designs to life in our coded prototypes, with Engineering owning the production build. You’ll report to the Director of Design, work closely with Product and Engineering on both teams, and learn alongside designers who work in design and code every day.
Teamwork and shared enthusiasm are a core part of our culture, which is why this role involves joining us in the Boston office for 3 days each week.
What You’ll Do:
- Design platform features: Work with PMs and engineers to take features across Network and Core Services from problem framing through final designs, covering user flows, edge cases, and interaction states.
- Help make complex configuration feel simple: Design admin and self-configuration experiences (settings, permissions, user and organization management, rules, and routing) that help carrier admins set up and run Hi Marley with confidence.
- Design clear, data-heavy screens: Create tables, filters, logs, dashboards, and status views that help admins and internal teams understand network activity, integration health, and system behavior at a glance.
- Work in our code prototypes: Use our coded prototype environment to test ideas, explore interactions, and show engineering how a design should behave, with support from the team as your front-end skills grow.
- Contribute to our design system: Use our design system consistently, spot patterns that repeat across both teams, and help turn them into reusable, documented components.
- Collaborate across two teams: Join team rituals, share work early, explain your design choices, and learn to balancebalance scope, speed, and quality with your PM and engineering partners.
- Learn from users: Help planPlan and run usability tests with carrier admins, operations leads, and internal teams, and turn what you learn into design changes.
What We’re Looking For:
Required
- 3+ years of relevant experience in Product, UX, or Interaction Design
- A portfolio that shows strong interaction and visual design craft, a clear process, and how you thought through edge cases and states
- Proficiency in Figma and comfort working within a design system
- Interest in designing for complex workflows, such as forms, settings, permissions, or data-heavy screens
- Working knowledge of accessibility basics, including keyboard navigation, focus states, and contrast
- Clear communication, curiosity, and a habit of seeking out feedback
- A genuine curiosity about AI and emerging technologies, paired with the judgment to apply them thoughtfully and responsibly
Nice to Have
- Some front-end experience (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, or React), or a clear interest in learning it. This is where we want the role to grow over time.
- Experience prototyping in code, including with AI-assisted coding tools
- Experience designing admin consoles, configuration tools, or dashboards
- Familiarity with integrations, APIs, or developer-facing tools
- Experience with B2B SaaS, insurance, or other operations-heavy products
