Job Summary:
This role leads the engineering team behind point-of-sale technology at BJ’s fuel sites. NCR writes the POS software and product management decides what the platform should do. This team makes it work at BJ’s: integration with payment, loyalty and forecourt systems, configuration, testing and EMV certification, rollout to the sites, and support once live.
The team supports point-of-sale at more than 200 BJ’s fuel sites, with four engineers reporting to this role. Fuel is an increasingly important part of how BJ’s grows: new clubs bring new fuel sites, and member fuel savings are among the most visible reasons people join and renew. Both depend on the technology working at the dispenser, which this team builds and keeps running.
The Fuel POS Manager hires and develops the engineers and sets the standard for how integration is designed, tested and released. Managing people is real work in this role, not something squeezed in around delivery: communicating clear expectations, providing honest feedback in both directions, and creating development plans people actually use are important aspects of this job. Workload distribution and on-call scheduling sit with the manager as well.
Key Responsibilities:
Delivery and execution
- Plans the team’s work into a commitment the business can rely on, and clears what gets in the way
- Owns the technical design for how fuel POS integrates with payment, loyalty and forecourt systems, and the configuration that makes the platform run at a site
- Defines how changes are built, tested and certified, including regression across connected systems and anything that touches payment
- Runs releases and hardware refreshes at 200+ fuel sites, covering new site openings and retrofits with Facilities and Club Operations, and decides which NCR versions to take and when
- Keeps delivery predictable, raises schedule risk early, and stays in step with product management to keep the product roadmap on-track
Reliability and production ownership
- Holds the team accountable for what it delivers in production and keeps the Level 3 on-call support rotation properly staffed
- Owns second and third line escalation when fuel POS goes down at a site, and drives root cause on NCR-side defects until they are fixed
- Sets and tracks reliability targets for the platform, and reports where results fall short
- Maintains compliance with EMV, PCI-DSS and applicable payment regulations, and partners with information security and loss prevention on fraud controls and hardening
- Plans the platform lifecycle with Fuel Operations: version currency, hardware refresh, retirement and certification cycles
Vendor and commercial management
- Acts as the day-to-day technical owner of the NCR relationship, holding the vendor to agreed service levels and escalating when they slip
- Manages spend against an allocated budget and forecasts it accurately
- Tracks what the team’s work costs and challenges anything not delivering the expected benefit
- Brings the engineering view to renewals and competitive selection for fuel technology
Team leadership
- Hires for the team and runs the interview process for its roles
- Owns performance management for the team: goals, feedback and reviews
- Develops engineers through coaching and the skills the platform will need next
- Balances workload and on-call coverage across the team
Requirements:
- 5+ years of relevant experience, including 1+ leading others
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field, or equivalent practical experience
- Experience owning a point-of-sale or payment platform running in production across many locations
- Experience delivering and certifying payment changes against EMV and PCI-DSS
- Experience holding a software vendor to delivery quality and service levels
Preferred Qualifications:
- NCR fuel POS, or comparable forecourt platforms such as Gilbarco or Verifone
- Fuel dispenser and forecourt hardware
- Fleet fueling networks and loyalty or rewards program integration
- Environmental compliance and underground storage tank monitoring systems
- Multi-site hardware deployment at scale
- Agile or hybrid delivery environments
- PMP or ITIL certification
- Retail, membership, club operations or a comparable consumer-facing environment
Work Arrangement:
Hybrid: three days at BJ’s Club Support Center in Marlborough, MA and two remote. Occasional travel to club locations. Occasional work outside standard business hours to support upgrades and critical outages.
This is a hybrid role. Tuesday through Thursday are in-office days at BJ's Club Support Center in Marlborough, MA and Monday and Friday are remote days.
