Newmont's Merian operation is an open-pit gold mine located approximately 66 kilometers south of Moengo in the tropical rainforest of north-eastern Suriname. Construction began in 2014, with commercial production commencing in 2016. The operation includes five open pits and processes ore using a conventional mill and Carbon-in-Leach (CIL) circuit. Newmont owns a 75% interest in Merian, with the remaining 25% held by Suriname’s state-owned oil company. Operating on a rotational work schedule, Merian brings together a diverse workforce of Surinamese and international professionals in a modern camp environment.

Dimensions

Purpose

Coordinate and oversee exploration activities, ensuring compliance with standards and contractual obligations. Report performance results, conduct daily site visits, and ensure accuracy in work reports. Support continuous improvement projects to enhance safety, productivity, and cost-efficiency.

Essential Duties

• Administer site based exploration and production support
• Assess exploration contractors work to ensure compliance with exploration standards, procedures, work program objectives and contractual obligations
• Deliver exploration performance results to team members and implement feedback to refine monitoring processes
• Complete daily exploration site visits to determine drilling operation compliance with safety standards and environmental regulations
• Accountable for verifying that all exploration activity reports are accurate and compliant with contractual commitments
• Assist continuous improvement projects to improve exploration safety, productivity and costs
• Guide junior team members in exploration standard methodology
• Maintain adherence to regulatory standards for exploration

Training & Experience

Knowledge:

• Drill safety, drill production support, and compliance monitoring 
• Formal education qualifications in Geology, Engineering, or related fields
• Experienced in work practices associated to drilling operations and safety standards
• Strong communication skills
• Continuous improvement skills
• Proficiency in compliance and reporting

Technical Skills:

• Demonstrated proficiency in Drill safety, drill production support, and compliance monitoring
• Practical application proficiency in drill safety standards, environmental regulations, and monitoring processes that support survey programs 
• Familiarity with continuous improvement projects, including the ability to carry out specific activities using appropriate tools and processes to achieve defined business outcomes 
• Refer to the four levels of proficiency in our Capability Framework related to technical skills, which are specific to the role.

Working Conditions

Work Location: Merian, Sipaliwini

Work schedule: 14 work days, 7 days off and 10 hours
