VP, Principal Resilience Engineer
Chubb · Whitehouse Station
Chubb has made community-scale climate resilience a strategic priority, with executive support and the resources needed to operate on a national scale. The Vice President, Principal Resilience Engineer will provide engineering leadership for Chubb’s Community Resilience Initiative, connecting building design, construction, and community-scale mitigation with measurable reductions in damage, disruption, and insured losses.
We are looking for an experienced, creative engineer who can move beyond code compliance to ask: What will meaningfully reduce long-term risk for the community, at various scales of intervention, and how can we demonstrate that it works? The successful candidate will bring deep expertise in one or more perils, including wildfire, coastal and inland flooding, wind, and severe storms, together with a strong understanding of how buildings are designed, constructed, retrofitted, and maintained.
Reporting to the Executive Vice President, Global Resilience and Risk Consulting, and working hand-in-hand with the Vice President, Community Resilience, the Principal Resilience Engineer will work across Chubb’s risk consulting, underwriting, catastrophe modeling, claims, and analytics teams, as well as with external stakeholders, including property owners, developers, community associations, local governments, and utilities. The Principal Resilience Engineer will be responsible for establishing the technical basis for verified risk reduction and modeled loss reduction that supports community-scale resilience investments. They will be the technical backing to inform where verified risk reduction may support improved insurance availability, capacity, and responsible business growth, in collaboration with Underwriting, Actuarial, Catastrophe Modeling, and Risk Engineering.
This position offers a flexible location, with travel expected to support project delivery in targeted communities and key stakeholder engagements.
Why This Role Matters
Communities need more than information about their climate risk. They need clear, technically credible guidance about which interventions will reduce losses.
This is an opportunity to shape how engineering evidence translates into resilience investment and insurance confidence. The Principal Resilience Engineer will help communities understand what to do, help partners implement effective solutions, and help Chubb recognize meaningful risk reduction – supporting safer properties, stronger communities, and the responsible expansion of insurance in catastrophe-exposed markets.
Responsibilities
- Serve as a senior technical authority on building and community resilience, bringing subject matter expertise in one or more natural catastrophe perils and coordinating specialists across other disciplines.
- Lead field assessments and technical reviews to identify how buildings, sites, infrastructure, and surrounding conditions contribute to damage and loss.
- Develop prioritized recommendations across property, neighborhood, and community scales, recognizing where individual building improvements depend on coordinated action beyond the property boundary.
- Apply performance-based engineering judgment to develop solutions that extend beyond minimum code requirements and account for future climate conditions, asset life, and uncertainty.
- Translate recommendations into actionable scopes, design criteria, technical guidance, and implementation pathways for property owners and community partners.
- Partner with catastrophe modelers and analysts to translate physical vulnerabilities and proposed mitigation measures into appropriate modeling assumptions and scenarios.
- Assess whether modeled risk reductions are supported by engineering evidence, field conditions, and observed loss experience; identify limitations and additional validation needs.
- Work with underwriting and risk consulting colleagues to define meaningful mitigation criteria, documentation, and verification requirements that can inform risk selection, capacity, and other insurance decisions.
- Support evaluation of mitigation costs against potential reductions in damage, loss, and disruption, clearly communicating uncertainty and remaining exposure.
- Establish consistent assessment methods, technical review processes, and quality standards that can be applied across communities while accommodating local conditions.
- Explain technical findings and recommendations clearly to homeowners, community leaders, business partners, and senior executives.
- Mentor colleagues and turn project findings into practical guidance that strengthens Chubb’s broader resilience capabilities.
