The Role

The Honest Company is looking for a Contract SEO/GEO Content Writer on a part-time basis. This is a two-month contract role starting in October 2026. We are looking for a Data-Driven Content Writer who combines strong editorial judgment with hands-on optimization expertise. This role will create authoritative, engaging content designed to perform across traditional search engines and AI search engines (ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, Grok, and Google AI Overviews).

The ideal candidate understands both Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and Generative Engine Optimization (GEO), including how content structure, technical elements, entity signals, source credibility, and structured data influence visibility. This person will not only recommend optimizations but will also implement them directly within our content management system and supporting marketing platforms.

Key Responsibilities

Content Strategy and Development

Research, write, edit, and optimize high-quality content, including articles, landing pages, product pages, category pages, FAQs, guides, and other digital experiences.
Translate business objectives, audience needs, and search insights into clear, useful, and persuasive content.
Develop content briefs based on keyword research, audience intent, competitive analysis, search-result trends, and AI-generated answer formats.
Maintain a consistent brand voice while adapting content for different audiences, channels, and stages of the customer journey.
Refresh and consolidate existing content to improve relevance, accuracy, authority, and performance.
Verify claims and incorporate reliable sources, subject-matter expertise, and original insights when appropriate.

SEO and GEO Optimization

Conduct keyword, topic, audience-intent, and competitor research to identify content opportunities.
Optimize page titles, meta descriptions, headings, URLs, image alt text, anchor text, internal links, and on-page copy.
Structure content so people, search engines, and generative AI platforms can easily understand and retrieve it.
Apply GEO best practices, including answer-first writing, clear content hierarchy, concise summaries, FAQ development, entity clarity, factual support, and source attribution.
Strengthen experience, expertise, authority, and trust signals throughout digital content.
Identify opportunities to improve visibility in featured snippets, rich results, People Also Ask results, conversational search, and AI-generated answers.
Balance optimization requirements with readability, originality, accuracy, accessibility, and brand integrity.

Implementation and Technical Execution

Publish and update content directly within the company’s content management system.
Implement approved on-page SEO recommendations without relying solely on development or external agency support.
Build and maintain internal-linking structures that improve navigation, topic authority, and content discoverability.
Add or coordinate structured data and schema markup, such as Article, Product, Organization, FAQ, and Breadcrumb schema.
Identify and resolve basic content-related technical issues, including broken links, duplicate content, redirect needs, missing metadata, indexing concerns, and improper heading structures.
Collaborate with web development and technical SEO partners on issues involving site architecture, page speed, Core Web Vitals, rendering, canonicals, robots directives, sitemaps, and crawlability.
Perform prepublication and postpublication quality assurance to confirm that content and optimizations display and function correctly.

Measurement and Continuous Improvement

Monitor organic-search performance, AI referral traffic, rankings, click-through rates, engagement, conversions, and content visibility.
Use performance data to recommend and implement ongoing content improvements.
Establish testing plans for headlines, metadata, page structure, calls to action, and content formats.
Track optimization changes and communicate their impact to marketing and business stakeholders.
Stay current on search-engine changes, AI discovery trends, evolving GEO practices, and content-quality standards.
Distinguish proven optimization practices from emerging tactics and unsupported industry claims.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

Partner with Brand, Creative, Digital, Product Marketing, E-commerce, Communications, Legal, and subject-matter experts.
Translate complex business or technical information into accessible, audience-friendly content.
Provide SEO and GEO guidance to writers, agencies, and internal contributors.
Maintain editorial calendars, content inventories, optimization backlogs, and documentation of content standards.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications, Journalism, English, or a related field—or equivalent professional experience.
3–5+ years of experience in SEO-focused content writing, content marketing, editorial strategy, or a related role.
Strong portfolio demonstrating high-quality digital content and measurable organic-search results.
Demonstrated ability to implement on-page optimizations directly in a CMS.
Working knowledge of keyword research, search intent, internal linking, metadata, structured content, and schema markup.
Familiarity with how generative AI platforms retrieve, summarize, cite, and present information.
Experience using SEO and analytics tools such as Google Search Console, Google Analytics, Semrush, and Screaming Frog.
Familiarity with Shopify.
Excellent writing, editing, research, fact-checking, and proofreading skills.
Ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver accurate work within established deadlines.
Sound judgment when using AI-assisted tools, including the ability to validate facts, protect confidential information, and maintain originality and brand standards.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with HTML, CSS, JSON-LD, content taxonomies, or structured data implementation.
Experience in consumer products.
Familiarity with accessibility standards and inclusive content practices.
Experience optimizing e-commerce, product, or conversion-focused content.
Understanding of content-management workflows, project-management platforms, and digital asset management systems.
Experience measuring visibility or citations across AI-powered search and answer platforms.

What We’re Looking For

You are a writer who understands that effective optimization extends beyond adding keywords to a page. You know how to create genuinely useful content, organize it for discoverability, implement recommendations accurately, and use data to improve performance. You are equally comfortable drafting a compelling article, updating metadata in a CMS, building an internal-linking plan, reviewing structured data, and explaining performance results to stakeholders.

Compensation

The pay range for this role is $74–$83 per hour. Actual compensation is based on many factors including but not limited to depth of experience, skill level, ability, knowledge, education, certifications, and specific work location. This may be different in other locations due to differences in the cost of labor.
