Machine Shop Supervisor - Conventional

The Machine Shop Supervisor - Conventional, oversees the daily operations of Rotron's conventional machining area, leading machinists and operators to ensure parts are manufactured safely, accurately, and on schedule. Serving as the bridge between hands-on production and management, this role provides daily direction, technical support, and operational leadership while driving quality, productivity, safety, and on-time delivery.
In this front-line leadership role, the supervisor assigns daily work, coordinates workflow, monitors production priorities, and provides hands-on technical support for manual mills, lathes, and related equipment. The supervisor works closely with Engineering, Quality, Maintenance, Planning, and other Operations leaders to resolve issues and meet production commitments.
As a visible shop-floor leader, this individual is expected to spend significant time in the production area, reinforce safe work practices, verify adherence to procedures and work instructions, and respond quickly to quality, equipment, staffing, and scheduling concerns.
Success in this role requires clear communication, practical machining knowledge, sound judgment, and the ability to coach employees, reinforce accountability, and support a collaborative, continuous-improvement culture.
Position Responsibilities:
- Provide daily direction to conventional machinists and operators, including assigning work, communicating priorities, coordinating coverage, and monitoring progress against the production schedule.
- Support safe, efficient machining operations by reinforcing required procedures, personal protective equipment, housekeeping standards, and proper equipment use.
- Monitor workmanship and process compliance to ensure parts meet blueprint, GD&T, inspection, and applicable quality requirements.
- Provide hands-on technical support for machine setups, tooling, work holding, troubleshooting, and the operation of manual mills, lathes, and related conventional machining equipment.
- Partner with Engineering, Quality, Maintenance, and Planning to resolve production constraints, equipment issues, material concerns, and nonconforming conditions.
- Coach and develop employees, support onboarding and training, provide timely performance feedback, and address attendance, conduct, or performance concerns in partnership with management and Human Resources.
- Support continuous improvement activities focused on setup reduction, tooling optimization, machine utilization, waste elimination, workplace organization, and reliable equipment performance.
Qualifications You Need:
- High School Diploma or GED is the minimum; however, an associate or bachelor’s degree in a technical or management field is increasingly preferred.
- Typically requires 3–5+ years of machining experience, with at least 1–2 years in a leadership role.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, and preferably Oracle.
- Proficiency in CNC programming (e.g., Mastercam, Edgecam) and reading complex blueprints or CAD/CAM designs.
- Strong working knowledge of conventional machining practices, blueprint reading, GD&T, precision measuring tools, machine setups, tooling, and safe operating practices.
- Demonstrated ability to organize daily work, communicate priorities, solve routine production problems, and maintain accurate records in a deadline-driven manufacturing environment.
- Demonstrated ability and willingness to use AI tools to improve productivity, decision-making, work quality, and to reduce costs. The successful candidate must be able to identify appropriate AI use cases and critically evaluate AI-generated outputs.
- Due to the nature of Rotron's programs and products, applicants must have the legal right to work in the US and additionally must be legally authorized to access export-controlled information and source code.
- Must be able to stand for long shifts (8+ hours) and lift heavy materials, often up to 50 lbs.
Qualifications We Value:
- Prior supervisory or team-lead experience in a machining or similarly complex manufacturing environment.
- Experience with Lean Manufacturing, 5S, Kaizen, structured problem solving, or other continuous improvement methods.
- Familiarity with ISO 9001, AS9100, FAA, or other regulated manufacturing quality requirements.
- Experience coordinating production schedules, monitoring Work-in-Process (WIP), and balancing labor and equipment capacity.
- Working knowledge of CNC machining processes and the ability to collaborate effectively with CNC operators, programmers, and Manufacturing Engineering.
