Summary

The Plant General Relief position is a flexible, cross-trained position responsible for providing coverage across the Building Custodian, PPE Room, and Knife Room as staffing needs require. This position will provide coverage for scheduled vacations, call-ins, vacancies, and other departmental staffing needs.

When relief coverage is not required in the PPE Room or Knife Room, the employee will default to the Building Custodian position and perform all duties associated with that role.

The employee must be willing and able to move between assignments and work different schedules or hours based on the position being covered. Hours worked will be paid according to the applicable pay rate/grade of the job being performed.

The Plant General Relief employee is expected to become fully trained and qualified in all three areas and maintain the knowledge and skills necessary to provide effective coverage with minimal disruption to plant operations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Building Custodian – Default Assignment

When relief coverage is not needed elsewhere, the Plant General Relief employee will perform Building Custodian duties, including:

• Clean and maintain common areas, stairwells, hallways, locker areas, bathrooms, and other assigned areas throughout the facility.
• Transport and replenish cleaning products, supplies, and other materials throughout the facility as needed.
• Perform routine and scheduled cleaning and sanitation duties.
• Maintain assigned areas in a clean, sanitary, safe, and orderly condition.
• Operate cleaning equipment and tools as required.
• Respond to spills, sanitation concerns, and other custodial needs as directed.
• Work throughout the facility as operational or supervisory needs require.

PPE Room Relief

When assigned to provide PPE Room coverage, responsibilities include:

• Issue PPE, supplies, and equipment to plant employees according to established procedures.
• Assign issued items through the appropriate inventory system.
• Store PPE and supplies according to size, type, style, or other identifying information.
• Maintain accurate inventory and stock records.
• Conduct inventory cycle counts and make authorized inventory adjustments.
• Receive, organize, clean, and prepare PPE for employee use.
• Move or transport materials and supplies to other departments as needed.
• Provide professional customer service to plant employees and management.
• Maintain an organized, clean, and efficient PPE Room.
• Complete required paperwork, computer entries, and inventory documentation accurately.

Knife Room Relief

When assigned to provide Knife Room coverage, responsibilities include:

• Gather, receive, organize, clean, and prepare knives and related equipment for plant operations.
• Disassemble, clean, inspect, and reassemble knives and equipment as required.
• Organize and prepare knife carts for specific departments.
• Sharpen and maintain straight knives and other approved blades using appropriate sharpeners, honers, grinders, and equipment.
• Service and maintain Whizard knives and related equipment as trained and authorized.
• Operate knife washers and other Knife Room equipment.
• Ensure knives and equipment are prepared and available to support production startup and operations.
• Maintain accurate knife counts, check-in/check-out records, and required paperwork.
• Maintain and deep clean the Knife Room, equipment, and work areas.
• Follow all established Knife Room safety, accountability, and authorized-user procedures.

Floating/Relief Responsibilities

• Report to the department or position requiring coverage as directed by management.
• Provide coverage for vacations, call-ins, absences, vacancies, training, or other operational needs.
• Adjust work schedule, start time, and assigned duties based on the position being covered.
• Maintain proficiency in Building Custodian, PPE Room, and Knife Room responsibilities.
• Communicate effectively with supervisors and employees when transitioning between departments or shifts.
• Follow the SOPs, policies, work instructions, and accountability requirements of the position being worked.
• When no relief coverage is required, report to and perform the duties of the Building Custodian position.
• Compensation for hours worked will follow the applicable rate/grade of the position being performed.

Safety, Food Safety, and Compliance

• Follow all applicable USDA regulatory requirements and company HACCP, SSOP, SOP, GMP, and SQF programs.
• Maintain a strong commitment to employee safety, food safety, and product safety.
• Wear all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
• Follow Lockout/Tagout and other applicable safety procedures.
• Immediately report unsafe acts, conditions, damaged equipment, or food safety concerns.
• Work safely around knives, sharpeners, cleaning equipment, moving mechanical equipment, hot water, chemicals, and other hazards associated with assigned duties.
• Perform other duties as assigned by management.

Work Environment

This position works throughout a pork production facility and may be exposed to:

• Wet and/or humid conditions.
• Hot and cold environments, including temperatures around 41°F.
• Hot water and sanitation processes.
• Moving mechanical equipment.
• Cleaning chemicals and airborne particles.
• Raw meat and areas where pork is harvested.
• Loud production environments.
• Occasional outdoor weather conditions.

Proper PPE and all applicable safety and food safety procedures must be followed at all times.

Position Expectations

The Plant General Relief position is specifically designed to provide flexible staffing coverage across Building Custodian, PPE Room, and Knife Room operations. Employees accepting this position are expected to work where coverage is needed and maintain the training necessary to perform each assignment safely and effectively.

Primary/default assignment: Building Custodian
Relief assignments: PPE Room and Knife Room
Scheduling: Based on the schedule and staffing needs of the position being covered
Pay: Based on the applicable rate/grade for the job worked

Requirements

Education and/or Experience

• High school diploma, GED, or equivalent knowledge preferred.
• Previous experience is not required; however, the employee must successfully complete required training for each assigned area.
• Must demonstrate and maintain competency in Building Custodian, PPE Room, and Knife Room responsibilities before independently providing relief coverage.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Ability to read, document and complete simple conversation/direction in English.

• Ability and willingness to work in multiple departments and adjust assignments based on plant staffing needs.
• Dependable attendance and ability to provide reliable coverage.
• Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating instructions, SOPs, and procedure manuals.
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
• Strong communication and customer service skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and accuracy.
• Ability to perform basic math using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.
• Ability to maintain accurate inventory, equipment, and accountability records.
• Ability to use basic computer programs and inventory systems as required.
• Ability to safely operate tools and equipment associated with custodial, PPE, and Knife Room duties.
• Ability to prioritize work and transition between responsibilities as operational needs change.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands and arms, reach, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, and communicate with others.

The employee may be required to frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. The employee must have the physical ability to safely perform the duties of all three positions.
