Teacher's Success Story

Role Description/Purpose

The British Council is the UK's international organisation for cultural relations and educational opportunities. We build connections, understanding, and trust between people in the UK and other countries through our work in English language teaching, education, arts, and culture. Operating in more than 100 countries, we reach millions of people each year through our programmes, services, and partnerships, creating opportunities and changing lives through international collaboration and mutual understanding.

In Algeria, the British Council delivers a range of English language courses for primary and secondary Young Learners at our teaching centre in Algiers. Young Learners represent a significant proportion of our student community, and we are seeking an enthusiastic, dedicated, and experienced Teaching Assistant who is passionate about supporting children's learning and development.

Working closely with the class teacher, you will contribute to the delivery of high-quality English language teaching by supervising, monitoring, and motivating learners throughout lessons. You will help create an inclusive and supportive classroom environment that encourages active participation and positive engagement in learning.

The role requires a strong commitment to safeguarding and child protection, with responsibility for modelling appropriate behaviour and ensuring that learners are supported to participate confidently and safely in classroom activities. You will also contribute to providing an excellent customer experience by supporting the flow of students and parents within the teaching centre and responding to enquiries in a professional, helpful, and welcoming manner.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a globally recognised organisation and make a meaningful contribution to the learning experience of Young Learners in Algeria while supporting the British Council's mission of fostering connections, opportunity, and trust through education.

Role Accountabilities

Working as part of the Teaching Centre team, you will play an important role in supporting the delivery of a positive and engaging learning experience for our students. You will supervise and support learners during classroom activities, encouraging active participation, self-awareness, and mutual respect. You will help create a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment where students can thrive, while remaining attentive to individual needs and responding appropriately to any issues that may arise. The role also involves supervising students during break times and ensuring they remain safely supported until the class teacher returns.

You will work closely with teachers to support the effective delivery of lessons by assisting with classroom setup and preparation. Where required, you may provide translation support to facilitate communication between teachers, students, and parents. You will help ensure that customer feedback is appropriately communicated to teachers or Customer Services teams for follow-up and will support the smooth day-to-day operation of the Teaching Centre by working closely with the Teaching Centre Operations Coordinator or Officer. In addition, you will assist teachers in promoting positive student behaviour and maintaining an effective learning environment.

Beyond classroom support, you will contribute to the delivery of excellent customer service and support local marketing and promotional activities. You will assist with the planning and logistics of Open Days and other Teaching Centre events, helping to ensure operations run efficiently and professionally. The role also offers opportunities for continuous professional development through participation in training activities and briefing sessions throughout the year.

A strong commitment to safeguarding, inclusion, and wellbeing is essential. You will be expected to apply and uphold British Council policies and standards relating to Child Protection, Equal Opportunity and Diversity, and Health and Safety, ensuring a safe, respectful, and welcoming environment for all students, colleagues, and customers.
