About the Team
We are looking for a hands-on Payments Team Lead to take technical and operational ownership of our internal payment gateway, which provides a common integration layer over multiple payment service providers. You will lead experienced developers who built the existing solution, working closely with them to evolve the architecture, ensuring reliable, secure, and scalable payment solutions that support our business operations and customer experience.
You will work closely with Product, IT, Finance, Operations, and Billing teams to translate business needs into reliable platform capabilities while building the technical knowledge and operational maturity of the team.
You will be part of an international environment where engineering ownership, customer focus, accountability, and collaboration are expected. Fluency in English is essential for this role.
About the Role
- Lead the payments engineering team day to day, setting priorities, managing delivery plans, and ensuring predictable, on-time execution.
- Interpret business needs from customers, stakeholders, and product managers, translating them into clear technical designs and actionable development tasks.
- Own the technical direction for the payments domain, balancing short-term delivery pressure with long-term platform resilience, scalability, security, and maintainability.
- Design, document, and communicate solution architectures, including technical impact, effort, dependencies, and resource requirements.
- Lead by example through hands-on technical guidance, design reviews, code reviews, and pragmatic engineering decision-making.
- Act as a subject matter expert for payment processing, payment gateway integrations, transaction lifecycle management, and reconciliation.
- Ensure seamless integration between payment platforms, billing systems, CRM/BSS, financial systems, and external payment service providers (PSPs).
- Oversee payment transaction flows, including authorization, capture, settlement, refunds, recurring payments, and exception handling.
- Ensure payment processing accuracy, transaction traceability, and reliable reconciliation between payment providers, internal systems, and financial records.
- Drive improvements in reliability, payment success rates, transaction processing performance, cost efficiency, and overall platform reliability.
- Contribute to capacity planning, performance tuning, and platform evolution to support increasing transaction volumes and business growth.
- Promote and enforce best practices in AI-assisted development, coding standards, software quality, automated testing, CI/CD, deployment reliability, and full lifecycle ownership.
- Ensure observability, security, compliance, and operational readiness are considered across new and existing payment capabilities.
- Lead production ownership, incident investigation, root cause analysis, and continuous improvement of payment processing and operational procedures.
- Participate in recruitment and uphold high standards for technical excellence across the team.
Requirements
About You
Must Have
- Proven technical leadership and coaching experience in a team lead, senior engineer, or similar role.
- Strong emotional intelligence, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
- Ability to balance short-term delivery and operational priorities with long-term technical direction.
- Experience prioritizing production operations, technical debt, integrations, and roadmap delivery.
- Strong hands-on experience developing and operating scalable distributed systems.
- Proficiency in Go, including concurrency, asynchronous processing, testing, and performance optimization.
- Strong software architecture and system design skills, particularly for service-oriented or microservice architectures.
- Experience designing and maintaining reliable REST APIs and external system integrations.
- Experience with AWS and cloud-native production environments.
- Solid understanding of CI/CD, automated testing, deployment practices, and full software lifecycle ownership.
- Working knowledge of relational databases and transaction consistency.
- Knowledge of networking fundamentals, application security, encryption, secrets management, and secure handling of sensitive information.
- Experience establishing production observability through metrics, logs, dashboards, and alerting.
- Hands-on knowledge of payment gateways, PSP integrations, and end-to-end payment transaction lifecycles.
- Strong understanding of authorization, capture, refunds, settlement, failure handling, and reconciliation.
- Experience diagnosing payment failures, transaction inconsistencies, integration issues, and reconciliation discrepancies.
- Understanding of payment security principles, including PCI DSS, tokenization, encryption, and data minimization.
- Fluent written and spoken English.
Nice to Have
- Previous integration experience with Stripe, Adyen, Checkout.com, or comparable PSPs.
- Experience with Prometheus, Grafana, and Loki.
- Experience with PostgreSQL and NoSQL databases.
- Experience with event-driven systems or message brokers such as Kafka or RabbitMQ.
- Experience with Docker and Kubernetes.
- Knowledge of .NET.
- Experience with digital wallets, recurring payments, and subscription billing.
- Experience with PSP routing, failover, retries, idempotency, circuit breakers, and duplicate-payment prevention.
- Experience with payment-provider migrations, API version changes, webhook processing, sandbox testing, or provider certification.
- Experience defining SLOs, leading production incidents, conducting root-cause analysis, and improving operational runbooks.
