POSITION TITLE: Freelance Language Interpreter
DEPARTMENT/LOCATION: School Support / District Wide
HOURS OF WORK/CALENDAR: Mon - Fri, as needed.
SALARY: $25/hour with a minimum of 2 hours per even
STATUS: This is a temporary, on-call or as needed position with available hours available during, before and after school.
POSITION SUMMARY: The purpose of Freelance Interpreters is to provide support to our non-English speaking parents with specific responsibility for communication with their student’s building, teacher(s) and/or office staff. This position would work events similar to those listed below, as well as additional events as assigned.
After-School and Evening Activities -
Must be available to attend and provide interpretation services at assigned school events outside regular working hours, as needed. These include, but are not limited to, Back-to-School Night, Sneak-a-Peek Night, open houses, family engagement activities, and other school-sponsored events.
Parent-Teacher Conferences -
Required to attend and provide interpretation services during scheduled parent-teacher conferences at their assigned building. Responsibilities may also include coordinating with and assisting freelance interpreters to ensure appropriate language support for families.
Enrollment and Registration -
Required to participate in scheduled enrollment and registration activities, including districtwide enrollment events, enrollment nights, and enrollment activities at their assigned building. Provides interpretation and translation assistance to students, families, and school staff as needed. Also assists families with school withdrawals, transfers, kindergarten transition activities, and other enrollment-related services.
Districtwide Interpretation Support -
Must be available to provide additional interpretation and translation services at other schools or district-sponsored events, as assigned. This includes providing support in person, by phone, or electronically.
Travel Between Buildings -
Must be willing and able to travel between district buildings to provide interpretation coverage based on district needs.
District-Sponsored Events -
Full-time interpreters are required to attend and provide interpretation services at OPS-organized events, as assigned, including events outside their regularly scheduled work hours.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Strong proficiency in spoken and written Spanish and English.
- Professional interpreter certification and/or relevant professional interpreting experience preferred.
- Previous experience interpreting and/or translating, preferably in an educational, school, or community setting.
- Strong listening, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Must live in the KC Metro area.
