Thailand, historically known as Siam, is located at the center of the Indochinese Peninsula with a population of almost 70 million people. In fact, Tai people migrated from southwestern China to mainland Southeast Asia around ten centuries ago. Today, Thailand is considered a middle power in global affairs and ranks very high on the Human Development Index. It has the second-largest economy in Southeast Asia and the 22nd-largest in the world in terms of purchasing power parity. The South Asian country is classified as a newly industrialized economy, with manufacturing, agriculture, and tourism as leading sectors.
